Kindness Is The Best Gift Ever

Published: December 24, 2008

Anyone who knows me is well aware of the fact that 2008 has not been my year. In fact, if do-overs existed in life, I would gladly apply. I would even be willing to fill out forms in triplicate, stand on my head and dance a jig - all at the same time.

You see, earlier this year, my family faced the loss of not one, but three members. My mother, my father and my unborn son will not be here to celebrate the season with us or ring in 2009. The blows would have been unbearable had it not been for the love and support of my surviving family members, my friends, my co-workers and perfect strangers who reached out to prove that light does shine even in the darkest hours.

As hard as it's been, I cannot help but feel blessed. My family has been fortunate enough to have an amazing support system in place to help us endure and focus on the good things in life we do have.

As we open presents tomorrow morning, no doubt, tears will be shed in memory of those we have lost. But, we will get through it and we will have a good day thanks to the very special people in our lives. After all, I fancy it will be impossible to stay sad for long with two little girls jumping up and down to see just what Santa put under the tree.

While I count my blessings and cherish memories, I cannot help but wonder how many more people out there are shedding tears on the inside this holiday season. How many won't have a family gathering to attend? How many will spend the day cold and alone? How many will go without a present, a phone call or a single card from a friend or loved one?

As we all rush about getting ready for the big day tomorrow, I implore everyone to slow down, pause and remember the real meaning behind the season. It's not about brightly colored ribbons, shiny packages and high-priced electronics. It's about giving selflessly and being gracious enough share.

Try keeping in mind that the person holding up the line in the store, the guy who goes a little too slow in traffic or the lady down the street who always frowns when you drive by might be fighting their own ghosts this holiday season. Rather than complain, get mad or display a frown, put a smile on your face and pass it on. Trust me - there are people out there who will appreciate this most basic act of human kindness. And, trust me, this is the most precious gift you can ever give or receive. I speak from experience here.
