Coastal Cleanup volunteers collected almost 2 tons of trash Sept. 20 in the Land O' Lakes area, reported Betsy Crisp, a coordinator for the event.
In this, the 18th annual Coastal Cleanup for Land O' Lakes, a total of 41 teams pre-registered with more than 400 volunteers scouring their designated sites for trash. Jim Godwin and Cub Pack 33 teamed up with John Russell's Boy Scout Troop 33 to make the largest group of about 80 volunteers in one area, Crisp said. Other scouting groups participated, including Cub Scout Pack 323 and Pack, Troop and Crew 3.
Items found this year included a recliner, a television, tires, a battery, transmission, tailpipe, spark plug, used oil, clothing, glasses, toys, many miscellaneous pieces of trash and lots of cigarette butts. The most interesting things, Crisp said, according to the data sheets, were dead creatures and bones/skulls.
The finale was a drawing for door prizes during lunch. Sponsors included SunTrust Bank, Hungry Harry's Famous Bar-B-Que, Zephyrhills Water, McDonald's, Taylor Rental and the Lutz-Land O' Lakes Woman's Club.
